Historical Profile
The Cornwall Regional Hospital was the first multidisciplinary hospital constructed in Jamaica since the building of the University Hospital 21 years before. At the time it was considered one of the most elaborate and sophisticated institutions of its kind in the world. It was the largest single investment made by the Jamaican Government.
It was built to meet the total health needs of the County of Cornwall (see a map of Jamaica for county boundaries), hence the name Cornwall Regional Hospital. It is the main hospital of four in the Western Regional Health Authority, the other three being Noel Holmes Public General Hospital in Lucea, Hanover, Falmouth Public General in Falmouth, Trelawny, and the Savanna-la-mar Public General in Savanna-la-mar, Westmoreland.
