No New HIV Infection……………Know Your Status Now” Health Care Workers Seminar a huge success ahead of World Aids Day Activities.
The Epidemiology and Research Unit of the Western Regional Health Authority hosted its first Health Care Workers Seminar at the Cornwall Region Hospital on Nov, 23, 2011. The objective of the seminar which was held under the theme “No New infection ……..know your status now” sought to equip employees of the region with the practical skills needed to assess their risk level for getting HIV . The sessions also provided all the necessary information and strategies needed for each health to become a safe sex ambassador for the region.
The interactive sessions included Condom Skills Building exercises as well as an in-depth risk assessment activity. Information sessions included HIV 101 presented by Social Worker Ms. Kimone Simpson and a breakdown of where we are as a country and where we would like to be in the address delivered by the Regional Director Dr. Ken Douglas.
The seminar was well-received by staff and is a pre-cursor for the upcoming World Aids Day Activities. The entire country will be coming alive on Dec 1, 2011 as there will be various activities around the island building an awareness of the epidemic in our country. The St. James Health Department Expo will be hosted at Sam Sharpe Square and all members of the public are invited to attend.
